Labor Mountain Fire Update
Monday, September 8, 2025
Size: 1,984 acres
The Labor Mountain Fire has stayed within its current fire perimeter, still at 1,984 acres. Infrared perimeter mapping flights have been unable to fill (UTF) due to weather and other factors. Once the aircraft is available, we should see slightly higher acres than reported. Yesterday afternoon, fire backed down towards the 112-spur road where firefighters were able to conduct strategic burning operations. Burning operations in this area will continue today, if weather conditions are still favorable.
Today, firefighters will continue road preparation work on Forest Roads 9703 and 9737. Crews will continue implementing structure protection plans along Road 9737. Road preparation for an alternate southern containment line will begin on Forest Road 9738. Scouting for alternative holding features will occur near Teanaway Ridge, Jack Creek, and the Old Blewett Pass Highway areas. Firefighters will monitor the East Fork of Stafford Creek, as there is potential for upslope fire runs, given today’s wind and slope alignments. The area in Standup Creek above the middle fork will also be monitored for upslope runs.
Moderate fire behavior is expected for the Labor Mountain Fire again today. Winds will be out of the northwest. Backing and flanking of the fire may be expected, including incidents of isolated tree torching. Weather is expected to shift today, bringing cooler temperatures and increased chances of precipitation and wetting rain in the coming days. There is potential for showers and isolated thunderstorms this afternoon.
Evacuations: There are no evacuations currently in place for the Labor Mountain Fire. Please refer to the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office Facebook for any future evacuation notices. Kittitas County Emergency Management Information: https://www.co.kittitas.wa.us/sheriff/emergency.aspx.
Closures: The fire’s behavior is very dynamic. For public and firefighter safety, fire managers are encouraging people to avoid the area. Check the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest’s website alerts for current closures in the area: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/okanogan-wenatchee/alerts.
Smoke: More rainfall and northwesterly winds should help to scour out smoke and improve air quality in the coming days. Air quality is still being impacted in Cle Elum. For smoke impacts, visit the WA Smoke blog: https://wasmoke.blogspot.com/ or AirNow.
